Renée’s gala was ever approaching. In reality, it was her husband’s, but she may have kidnapped it to help fundraise for the animal shelter. After all, what was more drab than just lawyers running around? Throw some good charity in there, and it seemed more appetizing.
Most of the interns had approached her, many nervous. But she told them it would be all fine and dandy. There would be plenty of people there to talk to, and the prospect of inviting a plus one helped. Something about inviting someone to a fancy shindig made people a bit more confident.
The café was closed for the day, to help the new cats that were dropped off to acclimate without all the people. Granted, Renée had her fair share of making sure she pet them all. Well, the ones that would allow her to do so. She was now enjoying being at her husband’s office. Mainly just to people-watch. She somewhat enjoyed the fast pace the office held, but she was also there to slow people down.
Feeling a need for a treat, she took the stairs to the second floor of the large office. Also, where the café was, it was a bit empty, minus a few people here and there. However, her eyes did land on someone who most definitely needed a break from scanning a leather folder of documents. “Charles,” she smiled. “Your regular coffee order? And I do believe you need a chocolate chip cookie as well.”
Charlie Braun had needed a break from his typical settings of the University library and his tiny paralegal closet the Law Firm. While he loved his apartment, the chaos of it kept him grounded, he knew it was best to not take work there if for nothing else but his own mental health. Homework and studying for the bar was one thing at his home, work, well, that was an entirely different matter. So, for the day, he had set up shop in a quiet corner of the break room.
Papers were strewn all over the table. Two or three folders were stacked on a corner. Charlie's usual brand of organized chaos to make himself happy. Brown eyes were pouring over a case study that Emmett Armstrong had given him. It was already won and done, but he had to present his boss his own game plan on the situation, and how he would go about winning it. A test of sorts, hypothetical stuff to give his brain some flex. Any research he did was for going about the case, not how Emmett had won it.
He had been so engrossed that he hadn't noticed someone approaching until there was a shadow over him, cutting off the overhead lighting. Charlie recognized the voice instantly, if it had been a classmate, he wouldn't have even bothered looking up, but Renée Hahn required respect. Brown eyes looked up now, smiling, "Miss Hahn, you can call me Charlie like everyone else," besides, his actual name was too formal for his own tastes, "And thank you. Coffee and a cookie sounds great."

“Excellent,’ she smiled, knowing full well that if had said no. Renee would have already done the thing. Maybe it was because she was the boss’ wife and people couldn’t necessarily say no to her. But she wasn’t pressuring anyone to talk to her more so they could have a break. Everyone in the office worked hard, and the days could be long.
Renee walked to the counter where she paid for the treats and grabbed a table number slat. “So, Charlie..what has my husband have you looming over today?” she asked, taking a seat across from the young man. Out of all the interns that Emmett had, Charlie was one who seemed to match her husband’s workaholic tendencies. Law was like that, but Renee wanted to make sure the young man had a life, too. “I’m sure you’ll be attending the gala as well. A nice break I think.” Kind of. It was still networking, but there would be dancing and so forth.
When Renee declared his answer as 'excellent', the young man couldn't help but to smile - mainly because they both knew that even if he had said no, she would have found some way to still provide him said coffee and cookie. It was just easier to say yes, and quite frankly, Charlie was never one to turn down free coffee or cookies - it was fuel. His brown gaze returned to the papers at hand as the older woman disappeared to take care of his order now, not thinking about how he probably could have taken care of that for her until she reappeared and sat down across from him: "So, Charlie..what has my husband have you looming over today?"
Charlie's gaze flickered to the papers once more before pushing them aside, deciding that he welcomed the break, "It's a case study. Already won - actually, I think Emmett won it. But he asked me to review it and put together my own plan and present it to him. It's a different type of studying for the bar - less text book, more thinking outside of the box." He had to had to to his boss, it was clever thinking, but granted, Charlie expected nothing less of a mentor like Emmett Armstrong. Truth be told, the young man was certain that Renee didn't care to talk about the holdrums of law work though - she probably got enough of that. Sure enough, she then brought up the gala. Ah, the gala. He nodded, smiling, "That's the plan. Good for networking and quite frankly, fun with the coworkers outside of the office." Charlie gave thought for a moment before asking, "Uh, Ms. Hahn, are dates required to this event?"

She pondered over Charlie's words as he explained what he was working on. It was definitely an interesting way to approach things, but at least the work was somewhat provided for them. A good exercise to see how people's brains worked. While Renée couldn't handle that kind of work in her head, she could understand some of it. It was hard, but being a lawyer wasn't an easy thing.
When Charlie mentioned networking and all of that, Renée nodded. “It's for fun too, you know,” she smiled. “We're not going to be breathing down your neck.” The older woman raised her eyebrows at the question of bringing a date. Renee didn't know if she should mess with him or not. “Well, I know most of the people are. You sound like you want to…or are you hoping you don't have to?” she inquired. Usually if they were dodgy in their answers, it meant their mind was lingering somewhere they didnt know was right or not.
